Madame Delacroix Draft
[!warning] Canon Correction A previous draft of the Session 8 wrap-up appendix listed her as “Marguerite Delacroix,” conflating her with the pregen of the same surname from the [Audition one-shot](…/…/chapters/Chapter 3 - Vienna/One_Shot_The_Audition/one-shot-the-audition.html). Session 1 play notes (3 August 1814) confirm her actual full name is Madame Geneviève Delacroix.
Overview
Madame Geneviève Delacroix is a French widow who first crossed the party’s path at the Vienna city gate on 3 August 1814, when customs officials were unpacking her luggage on the roadside and pressing her on the medals and miniature portrait of her late husband — a French war hero killed at Leipzig fighting for the Austrian Emperor against Napoleon. She protested her treatment in rapid French, claimed she was travelling to see Countess von Thun in pursuit of her widow’s pension, and was visibly relieved when Adrien stepped from his carriage to assist her in French and Wyndham vouched for her as an English officer to prevent a physical search.
She has since become a recurring fixture in the social texture of the Vienna chapter: comfortably situated within the Countess von Thun’s circle, present at salons and aristocratic events, and visibly friendly toward Varrio in particular — exchanging discreet waves across rooms more than once. At the Grand Masquerade in Session 8 she wore a modest domino, sat alongside the Countess, and gossiped about other guests, including pointing out Honoria Lyndhurst in her peacock mask and speculating openly about Honoria’s mysterious connection to Lord_Percival_Harcourt.
Physical Description
A well-dressed French woman in her forties or thereabouts, modest in cut and meticulous in detail. Speaks French naturally, French-accented German with effort, and English not at all. Carries herself like a woman who has lost more than she will ever say.
Personality
Composed, observant, and socially canny in the way that women who have survived a lost war and a dead husband often are. She is grateful to people who have done her small kindnesses and remembers them — Adrien and Wyndham specifically — and she trades effortlessly in the kind of soft society gossip the Countess’s salons run on. Whether her sympathies remain with France, with Austria, or only with her own survival is an open question.
Canon Timeline

Adrien assisted her; Wyndham vouched for her as an English officer. Established her connection to Countess von Thun and her purpose in Vienna (a widow’s pension).
- Sessions 2–7: Recurring presence in Vienna society. Friendly with Varrio at multiple events.
- Session 8 — Grand Masquerade (Palais Lobkowitz, evening of 8 August 1814): Sat with Countess von Thun in a modest domino. Gossiped about other guests; pointed out Honoria Lyndhurst and speculated about her connection to Lord Harcourt.
Knowledge
- The internal politics of the Countess von Thun’s salon circle
- The French expatriate community in Vienna and its loyalties
- Society gossip about prominent guests at major events — including Lady Honoria
- Her own pension paperwork and the Austrian bureaucracy that has been blocking it
Open Questions
- Is she connected to the Brotherhood? No canon evidence either way. Her open friendliness with Varrio could be coincidence or cultivation.
- Where did her loyalty actually settle? Her husband died for the Austrian Emperor. She is French. She lives in Vienna. The angles are open.
- Why does she keep finding the party? The recurrence is real. Whether it is engineered or merely sociable is a Keeper question.
Final Notes
Madame Delacroix is a low-temperature recurring NPC whose value at the table is texture and a possible information vector through the Countess von Thun’s salon. She is not currently a threat or an asset of the cult — she is a socially proximate observer who has acknowledged the party in public on multiple occasions, which is itself a quiet form of patronage in Regency Vienna.
[!info] Keeper Only Delacroix is the kind of NPC whose loyalty can be defined later by what the campaign needs. She could be: a Brotherhood asset who has been quietly reporting on the party’s movements for weeks; an Order asset Harcourt never bothered mentioning; a genuinely apolitical widow who happens to be friendly. All three are still on the table. Resist defining her until you need her to be something.
