Margaret Cavendish Draft
Description
Twenty-four. Fishing fleet: came out at twenty-one to stay with an aunt (aunt’s husband was a surgeon at the military hospital). Met Hugh at a dinner party, married within four months.
Independent spirit. Rides properly (not sidesaddle for display) in the early morning. Learned enough Bengali to speak to servants directly, which scandalises the older memsahibs. Reads travel accounts and natural history rather than novels. Has quiet, firm opinions about nearly everything and the social intelligence to know when to share them.
Background
Five months pregnant. Lost one friend to childbed fever already. The practical independence doesn’t extend to denial. Hugh is quietly terrified and trying not to show it, which she finds more touching than reassuring.
Little Freddy (Frederick Cavendish, age two) named after Hugh’s cousin. The ayah does most daily care, but Meg insists on being present.
As Social Guide
Takes to Emma and Georgiana immediately: young women with minds, travelling without husbands. Recognises her own species. Walks them through Calcutta’s women’s world with honesty: which morning calls matter, which charitable committees are about hierarchy not charity, where real conversations happen. Tells them things male contacts never would.
Katherine she reads differently. Notices that Katherine watches rooms with professional attention. Won’t push. Makes space for a woman who doesn’t fit the mould, because Margaret doesn’t entirely fit it either.
What She Sees
She’s catalogued Sophia: the way she laughs a beat too late, agrees a beat too fast, never initiates conversation when Surlish is in the room. Margaret recognises the architecture of a controlled household because her own is the opposite.
She’s seen what Surlish does to Hugh. If Emma or Georgiana asks the right question, she’ll answer honestly.
Motivations
Protect her family. Guide the visiting women honestly through a world she understands. She is perceptive, generous, and a source of real intelligence disguised as gossip.
