Jane Radcliffe
Miss Jane Radcliffe — real name Maggie Rowlins — was a con artist, age 23, from Shaftesbury, Dorset, residing in Tarryford, Wiltshire. Born into poverty, her first career was as a housemaid for a wealthy family. That experience made her angry that some lived in luxury while others starved. She was clever enough to spot loopholes in the class system and studied the laws and etiquette of her employers, then ran away after stealing good quality dresses and jewellery. This was enough to set herself up as a society lady, and the longer she played the part, the more deeply entrenched she became.
Usually she posed as a cousin or distant relative to stay in a wealthy house, or used her charm to get enough credit to live well before making a run for it. A white woman; while not a great beauty, Jane always knew how to present herself in the best light. Charming and friendly, but only to mask her fear and build allies.
Ideology: “You’ll get nothing if you don’t take it for yourself.” Significant People: Elizabeth Northlake, her first true friend. Possessions: Nothing but what she could carry in her carpet bag, plus a few pieces of stolen jewellery hidden about her person.

Jane conned her way into an indefinite stay with the Northlakes by meeting them on the road and offering a hard-luck tale about the loss of her carriage. By the time they were home, she had elicited an invitation. She planned to milk the family and move on, but was losing her nerve — she had grown fond of the family and made great friends with Elizabeth Northlake, to whom she was like an older sister.
