Overview

Roman Temple Aeternox is an ancient, sealed anatomical theatre beneath the University of Vienna and the Roman amphitheatre known as Fourvière. The temple has been repurposed by the Aeternum Choir as the primary ritual site for the Lyon cell’s harmonic working.

Location & Geography

  • Parent Site: Beneath Fourvière amphitheatre and the University of Vienna
  • Access: Hidden entrance; possibly through catacombs or subterranean passages
  • Depth: Underground chamber, sealed and isolated from the surface world
  • Atmosphere: Ancient stone, moisture, echoing emptiness

Architecture

  • Main Chamber: Circular or rectangular ritual space with acoustic properties
  • Altar/Performance Platform: Central focal point for the ritual
  • Seating/Standing Areas: For cult participants and observers
  • Resonance Channels: Built into walls and floor to amplify specific frequencies
  • Air Vents: Allowing sound to travel through subterranean network

Occult Significance

The temple site has been chosen for its inherent harmonic properties. Ancient architects (whether Roman or earlier) designed the space to resonate with specific frequencies. The Choir has:

  • Cleared and sealed the space
  • Added new acoustic enhancements
  • Prepared it for the August 15 ritual (Feast of the Assumption)
  • Protected it with occult wards and physical guardians

The August 15 Ritual

On the night of August 15, 1814, the temple will host the Lyon cell’s component of the Grand Canticle. The ritual will:

  • Invoke Yog-Sothoth through synchronized harmonic performance
  • Require the presence of all eight sites’ ritual singers
  • Demand significant magical and physical energy from participants
  • Potentially open a gateway or establish a permanent connection to the Outer God

Keeper Notes

  • The temple should be difficult to locate and access
  • The investigators may damage components or disrupt preparations as they choose
  • The temple’s discovery is a major milestone for the Lyon arc
  • Combat in the temple is possible but dangerous due to the confined space and Choir presence

SAN Exposure

Investigators who enter the temple should make SAN checks (0/1D4) reflecting the weight of ancient wrongness and the feeling that the space was built for inhuman purposes.
