Captain Thomas Keene
Overview
Captain Tom Keene is a weathered packet boat captain in his mid-40s who commands the La Belle Espérance, a fast British packet boat of French design. Gruff but fair, suspicious of fools but generous with professionals, he serves as the investigators’ passage to France and a reliable source of seamanship and practical wisdom.
Appearance & Demeanor
- Age: Mid-40s
- Appearance: Weather-beaten, with one ear pierced with a dull gold hoop. He dresses perpetually in a battered naval coat he refuses to remove.
- Manner: Direct, pragmatic, speaking in clipped military sentences
- Voice: Rough, with the accent of long years at sea
- Distinguishing Feature: Carries a dog-eared psalter in his coat pocket; speaks fluent, bitter French
Personality
Keene is a former Royal Navy lieutenant who refused promotion and left the service after suppressing a mutiny—an experience that disillusioned him permanently. He chose the merchant service over remaining in the Navy, preferring honest work to institutional politics.
He is not sentimental, but he has a code: those who follow his orders precisely and treat his ship with respect will find him reliable and protective. Those who don’t will be left in the drink without ceremony.
Role in Chapter 2
At Dover Docks
Keene greets the investigators as they board La Belle Espérance. He provides:
- Briefing on Channel crossing protocols
- Warning about French authorities and customs procedures
- Practical advice on behavior and documentation
His memorable line:
“You do what I say, when I say it, and no one gets left in the drink. Don’t lean too far over—unless you mean it.”
At Calais Arrival
As the boat approaches Calais, Keene gathers passengers on deck and delivers a sardonic briefing:
“Right, listen sharp now. You’re about to set foot on French soil, such as it is. Don’t let the smell fool you—they’ve only just started pretending there’s a king again, and the officials down there don’t trust anyone who doesn’t speak with a Parisian accent or have a bribe ready.”
He advises them to:
- Keep papers in hand and names straight
- Keep mouths shut unless spoken to
- Not flash coin or speak too loud
- Claim any odd items are heirlooms
- Say nothing about him, his boat, or where they came from
Then, quietly:
“Bienvenue en France.”

Keeper Notes
- Keene should be encountered briefly at the opening of Chapter 2 and again at the Calais arrival
- He is not combat-capable in the traditional sense, but he is dangerous on his ship
- He should not become involved in the investigators’ Lyon mission; he has no stake in it
- If the investigators mistreat him or his crew, he will refuse them passage
- He is a source of practical maritime knowledge but not occult insight
