Pemberton
Background
Pemberton is Freddy Cavendish’s tutor, hired to keep an eye on him — a task he finds almost impossible. He has been drawn into the party’s operations as an active field support asset.
Current Status (Vienna, August 1814)
Pemberton provides logistical and equipment support for the investigators’ operations. He carries supplies, manages safe houses, and assists with tactical preparation.
Role in Campaign
- Equipment Handler: Maintains and provides equipment for field operations
- Logistics Support: Manages provisions, safe houses, and travel arrangements
- Active Field Asset: Participates in operations as needed
- Vienna Liaison: Connected to local resources through Freddy’s social networks
Character Notes
Pemberton is:
- Reliable: Steady and competent in fieldwork
- Discreet: Maintains operational security
- Resourceful: Solves logistical problems without escalating to party members
- Subordinate: Defers to party direction and Freddy’s authority
[!info] Keeper Note Pemberton is a useful NPC for handling logistics and equipment management without bogging down the party with supply details. He can be used to introduce new tools, gather information from lower-class Viennese contacts, or provide alibi support. He is not a combat asset and should avoid direct confrontation.
Session 11 Update — Increasingly Alarmed (Afternoon, 9 August 1814)
Freddy spoke with Pemberton at Palais_Kinsky during the visit to the Hartley family. Pemberton is increasingly alarmed by Freddy’s erratic behaviour and deeply unsettled by the bars now installed on the windows. He expressed concern about the dangerous political schemes the party has entered.
Freddy told Pemberton to stay put and watch over Charlotte, who is recovering upstairs with her arm in a sling. Charlotte was glad for Pemberton’s company.
Current Status (end of Session 11)
- Location: Palais_Kinsky, watching over Charlotte
- Status: Alarmed, unsettled, but following Freddy’s instructions
- Emotional state: Growing unease. The bars on windows, erratic hours, and Freddy’s behaviour are pushing him toward a breaking point
Session 13 Update — Breakdown at the Safehouse; Lookout During Assault (Evening 11 August into Pre-dawn 12 August 1814)
Pemberton insisted on joining the rescue mission, arriving at Thaliastraße 12 with his medical bag, hat, and cane. The breaking point arrived during the assault briefing on the safehouse’s top floor: listening to Werner Bauer’s casual descriptions of grave-robbing and body parts, Pemberton suffered a mental breakdown — lunging across the room and attacking the tied-up prisoner.
Freddy tried to intercept but fumbled. Katherine doused Pemberton with a full pitcher of water, which snapped him back to himself. He was mortified.
He was assigned to serve as the outside lookout during the University assault — a role that keeps him useful without placing him inside the building.
Current Status (pre-dawn, 12 August 1814)
- Location: Outside the University, on lookout duty
- Status: Shaken, mortified, but functional
- Role: Outside perimeter watch during the assault
- Emotional state: The breakdown represents a threshold crossed — he has seen and heard enough that he can no longer maintain the fiction that this is ordinary dangerous work
Chapter 4, Session 1 Update — Returned to England (August 12–14, 1814)
Given the choice to continue to India or remain in Europe, Pemberton chose to part ways. He departed during the overland journey from Vienna to Trieste, returning to England. Freddy is now on his own for the first time in the campaign.
Current Status (August 1814)
- Location: En route to England
- Status: Departed the campaign permanently
- Role: None — retired from field support
- Emotional state: The University assault was his breaking point. He had followed his charge across a continent and decided he had seen enough.
