Background

Charlotte Thorne is a Northumberland heiress, archaeologist, and published author who writes under a male pseudonym. She joined the investigators in Chapter 0.6 (The Viscount Who Loves Me) after Juel’s previous character, Jane_Radcliffe, was killed at Drury Lane (Chapter 0.5, December 1813). Steady, perceptive, and deeply skeptical of the uncanny, Charlotte brought an academic rigour to the party’s investigations through London and Lyon.

Retirement from Active Play (Session 7)

Charlotte has been retired from active field operations beginning Session 7 (August 8, 1814) due to severe wounds sustained during the Nightgaunt attack at Palais Kinsky in Session 6.

Combat Injury

During the Nightgaunt assault (Session 6), Charlotte sustained a three-clawed slash across her shoulder — a wound severe enough to incapacitate her from further fieldwork. The physical damage combined with the psychological trauma from the encounter has made continued investigation impossible.

Current Status

Charlotte is convalescing at the party’s lodgings in Vienna, with plans to return to England as a researcher and trainer at Hartwell_House. She has:

  • Written formal retirement letters to Lord Percival Harcourt
  • Written formal retirement letters to Lady Honoria Lyndhurst
  • Been replaced in the field by Katherine Ward (the Rook), dispatched by Harcourt

Psychological Profile

Charlotte is:

  • Steady Under Pressure: Demonstrated resolve throughout London and Lyon
  • Deeply Skeptical: Struggled with the reality of the supernatural before direct experience
  • Traumatized by Nightgaunt: The encounter shattered her rationalist worldview and left lasting wounds
  • Aware of Limitations: Pragmatically accepted that she cannot continue field operations

Narrative Function

Charlotte’s retirement serves several campaign functions:

  1. PC Loss Consequence: Her injury is a concrete reminder of the Choir’s danger
  2. NPC Continuity: She remains present at the party’s lodgings, available for conversation but not combat
  3. Emotional Anchor: Her letters to Harcourt and Honoria reflect on the campaign’s toll
  4. Katherine Replacement: Her absence creates space for Katherine Ward’s introduction

Campaign Role Going Forward

Charlotte’s long-term trajectory is to return to Hartwell_House as a researcher and trainer for the Order_of_St_Aelfric — her archaeological expertise and authorial discipline make her well-suited to the role. In Vienna, she remains available for:

  • Conversation and emotional support scenes at lodgings
  • Intelligence sharing (she retains all knowledge from London and Lyon)
  • Potential plot hooks (recovery process, letters arriving from Harcourt)

Charlotte is unavailable for:

  • Field operations or combat
  • Infiltration or investigation outside the party’s lodgings
  • Supernatural encounters (psychological vulnerability)

[!warning] Keeper Note Charlotte is a Keeper NPC. She was a player character (played by Juel) through Session 6. The retirement is permanent for the Vienna chapter and beyond unless extraordinary circumstances permit her return (heal, recovery, new character arc). Her convalescence should be treated with respect — she is a capable investigator temporarily disabled by injury, not a failure.

Session 11 — Intelligence and Armory (Afternoon, 9 August 1814)

Adrien visited Charlotte at Palais_Kinsky on the afternoon of 9 August. She provided two things:

Intelligence from London: The Brotherhood keeps its captives alive as long as their voices are useful. Caroline can sing. Caroline is alive. This confirms Charlotte retains active Order communication channels from her convalescence. The London source is unspecified — likely Harcourt’s network or Honoria’s correspondence.

Personal armory: Charlotte pressed her weapons cache into Adrien’s hands — pistols, throwing knives, skeleton keys, and a rifle. She is arming the party from her sickbed.

Physical State

Charlotte is recovering at Palais_Kinsky with her arm in a sling. She was glad for Pemberton’s company — Freddy told Pemberton to stay put and watch over her.

The “alive while she can sing” rule provides both reassurance and a ticking clock: Caroline is safe only while Herzfeld needs her voice for the ritual. Once the Engine is fired or the ritual completes, that protection evaporates.
