Location Overview

The Kensington Coach Stables operate as a respectable, high-end coach hire and horse boarding service in West London, well-known among the wealthier class for providing discreet and luxurious transport. The true purpose is far darker: it serves as a holding facility for captives, a staging ground for the Orphean Society’s operations, and the departure point for victim transport to Stonehenge.

Exterior Description

A walled compound with ten-foot brick walls topped with iron spikes. An arched wooden gate opens onto a spacious cobbled courtyard. At night, a lantern swings from the arch, casting long shadows. The facility appears prosperous and well-maintained from the street, with a brass plate announcing “Fine Coach Hire & Horse Boarding.”

The yard is walled off with ten-foot brick walls topped with iron spikes. An arched wooden gate large enough for carriages opens onto a spacious cobbled courtyard. A strong scent of hay, manure, lye, and horses permeates the area. At night, a lantern swings from the arch, casting long shadows.

Interior Layout

Public Areas

  • Arched Gate & Courtyard: Main entrance; cobbled open space
  • Public Stable Wing: Standard coaching horses, clean stalls, professional presentation
  • Office Building (two stories): Ground floor reception and booking office; upper floor residence (Pennyman’s quarters)
  • Main Coach Houses (x3): Public coach storage and maintenance

Private/Cult Areas

  • Private Stable Wing: Reinforced doors, blackened windows, unusually quiet. Contains modified transport crates with chains and reinforced interiors.
  • Hidden Cellar: Beneath private stable block; accessed via concealed trapdoor inside locked tack closet
  • Storage & Ritual Equipment: Robes, incense, surgical tools, crate of “choir masks” (ivory masks with carved runes)

Key NPCs & Personnel

Master Walter Pennyman (Stablemaster)

  • Age: 52
  • Description: Wiry frame, long grey hair tied back, deeply lined face, intense blue eyes. Wears a high-collared coat even in summer, with a thick butcher’s apron when working.
  • Social Status: Tradesman of mid-tier wealth, well-regarded outwardly
  • Background: Former anatomy assistant turned failed veterinary surgeon. Expelled from King’s College for unorthodox experimentation, Pennyman fell into obscurity until recruited by the Orphean Society for his “hands-on” talents. Obsessed with the relationship between sound and tissue resonance, he believes pain harmonics are sacred.
  • Role in the Society: He oversees all prisoner transport and body disposal. He is responsible for preparing victims for ritual and ensuring the safe, silent departure of cult processions to Salisbury.
  • Traits: Cruel, obsessive, ritualistic, yet pragmatic. Maintains a façade of brusque professionalism.

  • Annika Laughton: Bound, gagged, weak but conscious; waiting for transport
  • Miriam Doyle: Blindfolded, terrified, subjected to Danforth’s experimental vocal conditioning
  • Thomlin Kerridge: Chained, delirious; overheard cult secrets; failing health

Clues & Discoveries

In Office Ledger (requires Spot Hidden or forced entry):

  • References to coach departure on June 10th to “Wiltshire - via Amesbury” (coded reference to Stonehenge)
  • Notation about “Ceremony” timing
  • Names and transfer destinations

Coach Tags:

  • Metal plates labeled “D1,” “D2,” etc. on private coach doors
  • Pinned note: “Departure for the Ceremony - New Moon”

  • Robes, incense, surgical tools
  • Crate of “choir masks” (ivory masks with carved runes)
  • Restraint equipment, documents

Verbal Slip (from wrangler if interrogated/intimidated):

  • “They said the stars must rise clean above the Henge on the twelfth… All must be ready before the tenth…”
  • Confirms ritual timing and prisoner transfer schedule

Atmosphere

  • Public Areas: Professional, quiet, well-lit by day
  • Private Stable Wing: Unnaturally quiet; scent of fear-sweat and chemicals
  • Hidden Cellar: Cold stone, faint echoes, unsettling silence; sense of presence

Security & Defenses

  • Gate: Locked; can be sealed in emergencies
  • Cultist Personnel: Armed with cudgels, knives, and at least one firearm (coach driver)
  • Pennyman: Dangerous; uses surgical precision in violence; familiar with restraint techniques
  • Confined Spaces: Limited sightlines; advantage goes to defenders
  • Horses: Can be panicked or used as obstacles

Combat Challenges

  • Gate Closure: If alerted, cultists seal the gates; investigators must either negotiate, climb walls, or break through
  • Horse Panic: Combat or loud noises may spook horses; running animals create chaos and casualties
  • Fire Risk: Lanterns and hay create conflagration hazard
  • Prisoner Movement: Captives may slow rescue attempts; some may be unable to move without assistance
  • Pennyman’s Ruthlessness: Will not hesitate to execute prisoners to prevent rescue

Investigation Opportunities

  • Interview Pennyman (Intimidate/Psychology needed; he’s confident in his authority)
  • Bribe or Charm Staff (lower-level cultists less committed; wrangler especially vulnerable)
  • Observe Transportation (watching for scheduled departures reveals timing)
  • Examine Ledgers (confirms Stonehenge transfer plan)
  • Search Crates (discover masks, robes, evidence of ritual preparation)
  • Eavesdrop on Staff (overhearing conversations may reveal prisoner locations or transfer details)

Campaign History

  • Chapter 1 (June 1814): The investigators attempted to break into Kensington Coach Stables twice. The first attempt failed — the group was chased off. On the second attempt, Augustus_Bolt created a distraction at the front gate while Charlotte_Thorne and another PC crept in through the back. They observed the Orphean Society loading masks and ritual paraphernalia into carriages — the cult was preparing to depart for Stonehenge. This intelligence prompted the party to ride ahead to Salisbury.

Keeper Notes

  • Timeline Pressure: Prisoners transfer on June 10th. If investigators delay past June 8th, rescue attempts must target Stonehenge instead.
  • Pennyman’s Confidence: He believes the gates and cultist personnel are sufficient protection. He may be overconfident against organized resistance.
  • The Wrangler is a Weakness: The low-level cultist is traumatized and may break under interrogation or be turned informant if guaranteed safety.
  • Multiple Exits: Investigators might distract guards at the front gate while entering through the private stable; or vice versa.
  • Crate Accessibility: Transport crates can be examined if investigators gain access to the private stable wing. Prisoners may be able to signal their location or identity.
