Nathaniel Rooke
Overview
Sir Nathaniel Rooke is a seasoned member of the Order of St. Aelfric, formerly a magistrate and respected antiquarian with a reputation for methodical precision and intellectual rigor. He is in his late 50s, still capable and sharp, though physical decline is beginning to show.
Dispatched to investigate the Orphean Society under the cover identity of Mr. Elias Harker (a freelance antiquarian and acoustician), Rooke was assigned to examine architectural anomalies beneath 43 Grosvenor Street and determine whether unregistered substructures existed for occult purposes. He successfully located evidence of the hidden sub-basement through records research and bribery, but was captured during his infiltration of the lower levels approximately two weeks before the campaign begins.
He has since been held in the Catacoustic Chamber, subjected to sensory isolation and harmonic conditioning. Recently (four days before campaign start), he was moved to Kensington Coach Stables in preparation for transport to Stonehenge, where he will serve as a primary sacrifice in the June 12th ritual.
Description
Rooke is tall and pale, with grey hair neatly combed back from a high brow. A prominent Roman nose and sharp cheekbones dominate his features. His right leg is slightly lame from an old injury sustained during magistrate work; he relies on a cane for longer distances, which he carries with quiet dignity.
His attire is always formal and impeccable—dark frock coats, white linen, polished boots. He wears a signet ring bearing the Order of St. Aelfric’s emblem.
Since captivity, his appearance has deteriorated markedly: his eyes are strained and unfocused from sensory deprivation, his complexion has become sallow, and his movements are tremulous. He has been subjected to systematic disorientation and harmonic torture designed to break his formidable mental discipline.

- Will insist on continuing the mission despite physical weakness; must be ordered to rest
- Frequently quotes classical texts, especially Seneca on suffering and virtue
- Tries to deduce others’ motives through careful observation of speech patterns and body language
- Protective of Bellamy (and vice versa); they support each other’s sanity

- Will be haunted by the experience but will not discuss it unless directly pressed
Intelligence He Possesses
If rescued and debriefed:
- Precise layout of the Orphean Society’s sub-basement and cell locations
- Information about the ritual space architecture and harmonic sigil placements
- Names and descriptions of at least four high-ranking cultists
- Confirmation that Hume is preparing victims for transportation to Stonehenge
- Timeline evidence that the June 12th ritual is imminent
- Details about the “five voices” imprisoned beneath the Society (the Choir Below)
- Knowledge that he was deliberately kept alive for use in the final ritual
Physical Condition (Campaign Start)
- Severely weakened from isolation and poor nutrition
- Will require medical attention (successful Medicine roll) to stabilize
- Cannot engage in strenuous activity for at least 24 hours without collapsing
- Hearing is partially damaged from conditioning; may require listeners to speak clearly
- Psychological trauma will manifest as anxiety, flashbacks, and hypervigilance
Campaign History
- Chapter 1 (June 1814): Rooke infiltrated the Orphean Society under the alias Elias Harker, investigating architectural irregularities at the Grosvenor Street address. He was captured, held in the sub-basement cells, then transferred to Kensington_Coach_Stables. On June 12, he was transported to Stonehenge and lashed to a tuning crucifix for sacrifice. Danforth was working her way toward him, killing other prisoners as she went. Rescued by the investigators during the Stonehenge assault — the two-pronged attack cut off the ritualists before Danforth reached him.
Relationship to Campaign
Rooke is a crucial rescue objective and a major ally for the rest of the campaign. His survival:
- Provides detailed architectural and procedural intelligence on the Orphean Society
- Establishes an Order chain of command directly connected to the investigators
- Creates emotional narrative weight: Order members are watching to see if their agent is saved
- Enables faster progress through the Vienna chapter (where his classical and historical knowledge becomes essential)
- Creates moral stakes: failure to rescue him has order-wide consequences
Post-Rescue Availability
Once rescued and briefly recovered, Rooke can:
- Provide direct testimony about the Orphean Society’s structure and personnel
- Assist with architectural analysis and layout planning
- Serve as an Order liaison and field advisor
- Offer perspective on the broader significance of the Canticle’s goals
- Mentor newer investigators in classical methodology and patience
His recovery will be gradual; he may require 2-3 days of rest and support before being fully operational again.
Appearances
Relationships
- Imprisoned by Dr Erasmus Hume — Held captive in Catacoustic Chamber then transferred to Kensington; Hume keeps him alive for final ritual
- Friend of Imogen Bellamy — Fellow captive; protective of her despite his own deterioration
- Knows Eli Tadcombe — Bribed Tadcombe to access the sub-level; Tadcombe's cooperation is his last known asset
