Herzfeld Letter to Savarin

Document Overview

A letter from Professor Albin Herzfeld in Vienna to Mathilde_Savarin in Lyon, recovered by the investigators from Savarin’s correspondence after the disruption of the Fourvière ritual on 14 July 1814. The letter is handwritten on good-quality paper, sealed with a wax impression of a stylised “O M” inside a circle — the Brotherhood’s crest.

Content Summary

The letter confirms:

  • The Aeternum Choir’s next ritual segment is scheduled for 15 August 1814 in Vienna
  • The “Brotherhood of the Open Measure” is the cell’s self-designation
  • The University of Vienna is referenced, though the specific location (the Sealed Anatomical Theatre) is encoded
  • Coded references to “our compatriot at our Eastern Resonant Post (where the Hugli bends inland)” — a cryptic pointer to Calcutta, requiring an EDU or History roll to decode, or later confirmation in Vienna
  • Correspondence rhythms suggest regular contact with Munich (“the Kantor”) — the first campaign appearance of the codename

Historical Role

This letter is the campaign-bridging artefact between Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. Without it, the investigators would have no reason to travel to Vienna after Lyon. The letter is why the party is in Vienna at all.

Subsequent uses:

  • Chapter 3, Session 1 (August 3–4): Re-examined by the party during their Vienna planning. Confirms August 15 as the operational deadline.
  • Chapter 3, Session 4 (August 6, Imperial Reception): Delivered to Harcourt during the reunion. Harcourt’s decoded analysis contributes to the 5-of-8 reveal.
  • Chapter 3, Session 8 (August 8): Honoria references Harcourt’s decoded version during the masquerade briefing.

Key Quotes (for handout use)

“By the Feast of the Assumption the apparatus will be ready. The Brotherhood of the Open Measure has borne the cost of flesh and of silver alike, and the Fifth Movement will not fail for want of either.”

“Our compatriot at our Eastern Resonant Post, where the Hugli bends inland, reports that the preparations continue on schedule despite the season.”

“As always, the Kantor’s coordination remains paramount. I expect no disturbance from the London or Orléans fronts, but should any arise, we will proceed regardless — our calculations permit for four; they do not permit for five.”

(The “four/five” reference is the germ of the 5-of-8 requirement — the party may have missed it on first read; Harcourt decodes it at the Imperial Reception.)
