Harmonic Engine
Current Holder: Albin_Herzfeld (located in the Sealed_Anatomical_Theatre beneath the University_of_Vienna)
Origin: Brotherhood of the Open Measure; designed by Professor Albin Herzfeld
Description
A 30-foot biomechanical instrument constructed from human body parts, installed in the Sealed_Anatomical_Theatre beneath the University_of_Vienna. The Engine is Herzfeld’s contribution to the Grand Canticle — Segment V, the Vienna cell’s ritual offering to Yog-Sothoth.
Components:
- Pipes: Bronzed esophageal tubes serve as wind pipes
- Bellows: Human lungs as pneumatic chambers
- Keys: Arms and hands wired to mechanical levers
- Heart: A living human brain at the Engine’s centre, interpreting the Canticle score
- Victims: Fully conscious but paralysed via Austrian alchemical neurotoxins
The Engine sacrifices multiple humans simultaneously while keeping them aware of their fate — a deliberate amplification of suffering that feeds the harmonic resonance required for the ritual.
Properties
- Operating frequency: A=432 Hz — the resonant key tied to the domain of Yog-Sothoth
- Sub-audible vibration: The Engine produces a physical pressure below the threshold of hearing, felt as a rhythmic thrumming in the chest. Katherine and Nell felt it from the university rooftop during their Session 12 reconnaissance.
- Sympathetic resonance: The Command_Tuning_Fork vibrates in sympathy with the Engine even at a distance. Georgiana felt her chest resonate when Katherine described the sensation.
- Counter-vulnerability: The De_Vermiis_Mysteriis describes counter-frequencies — tonal inversions that could collapse harmonic fields. Georgiana and Adrien identified this in Session 12 and believe a counter-ritual is possible.
Completion Status (11 August 1814)
Approximately 85% complete as of August 3. Main frame, lower register pipes, bellows, keys, preservation fluid circulation, and acoustic chamber modifications are all functional.
Outstanding requirements:
- Soprano voice (CRITICAL — DISRUPTED): Anna was the irreplaceable target. She is in party custody. Caroline_Hartley was named as a reserve target but the Brotherhood has not yet moved on her.
- Conductor brain (CRITICAL): The current brain (a philosopher captured six months ago) is deteriorating. Herzfeld has considered using himself.
- Final calibration (3 nights): Requires the Engine partially active with all components. Cannot begin until the soprano is installed.
- Ritual score (COMPLETE): Herzfeld has the full notation encoded in a harmonic-interval cipher (two copies — office and private apartments).
By-products
The Harmonische_Wachter are failed integration subjects — human bodies that rejected the Engine’s modifications. Rather than discard them, the Brotherhood repurposed them as guard creatures, controlled via the command fork’s A=432 Hz pitch.
Session 14 Update — Destroyed (Pre-dawn, 12 August 1814)
The Harmonic Engine was destroyed during the assault on the Sealed_Anatomical_Theatre.
How It Fell
- Counter-ritual: Georgiana struck the Command_Tuning_Fork against her sword inside the theatre, channeling the counter-ritual. The counter-vibrations pooled the allies’ magical energy and muted the Engine’s harmonic output. The ritual’s sustaining frequencies collapsed.
- Acoustic baffles toppled: Three large metal plates positioned at triangular points around the theatre were reinforcing the Engine’s sound field. Emma identified the baffles’ role. Emma, Thomas, and Freddy toppled them, further degrading the harmonic architecture.
- Putrefaction: With the harmonics dead, the Engine began to rot. The flesh-and-brass structure sagged, putrefied, and collapsed under its own weight. The organic components — lungs, esophageal tubes, wired arms, the central brain — decayed in moments, as though the ritual had been the only thing preserving them.
Current Status
- Status: DESTROYED
- Location: Wreckage in the Sealed_Anatomical_Theatre beneath the University_of_Vienna
- Recoverable: Nothing. The organic components putrefied. The brass framework collapsed. The ritual site is wrecked.
- Ritual impact: The Vienna node of the Grand Canticle is silenced. Segment V cannot be performed.
Relationships
- Created by Albin Herzfeld — Herzfeld designed and built the Engine; it is his life's work
- Located at Sealed Anatomical Theatre — Installed in the sealed anatomical theatre beneath the University of Vienna
- Resonates with Command Tuning Fork — The fork is tuned to the Engine's A=432 Hz operational frequency
- Requires Anna Lindqvist — Anna was the confirmed soprano target; without her, the ritual cannot succeed
- Created Harmonische Wachter — The Wächter are failed integration subjects — bodies that rejected the Engine's modifications
- Serves Aeternum Choir — The Engine performs Segment V of the Grand Canticle
