Command Tuning Fork
Current Holder: Georgiana_Wentworth (received from Katherine_Ward|Katherine at Palais Lobkowitz; carried to Thaliastrasse_12_Safehouse|Thaliastraße 12; **came to her hand while she slept — Session 10 escalation**)
Origin: Brotherhood of the Open Measure; manufactured to specification for Wächter command
Physical Description
A tuning fork of polished brass, slightly larger than a standard musician’s fork — roughly eight inches long. Two tines, a standard stem handle, and a small hallmark etched near the base: a stylised “O M” inside a circle — Offene Maß, the Brotherhood’s crest in abbreviation.
When struck, it produces a pure tone at A=432 Hz that sustains for roughly fifteen seconds under normal conditions. Under amplification (strike against a hard surface with a resonant body), the tone projects audibly across a large ballroom.
Function
- Primary: Wächter command. A strike of the fork coordinates all nearby Wächter to a shared tactical plan. Without the fork (or a similarly tuned instrument), the Wächter default to feral behaviour within ~10 minutes. Command is carried by rhythmic strike patterns, not melodies — a coded tactical language Adler learned as part of his Brotherhood initiation. (Session 9 interrogation canon.)
- Secondary: Engine synchronisation. The fork’s pitch matches the Harmonic_Engine’s operational frequency. Brotherhood doctrine suggests a properly tuned fork struck near the Engine can verify Engine calibration or trigger resonance checks.
- Tertiary — newly established: Two-way psychic conduit. The fork links user, Wächter, and Engine. An operator striking it can feel the Engine through it — and Wächter in range can feel the operator. In Session 9, Georgiana experienced a flicker of command over the two burning Wächter at the moment of their deaths; later, carrying the fork from the withdrawing room to the carriage, she described a distant, sustained vibration “like something at the other end of a long string, listening back.” (Session 9 play canon; Adler confirmed the bidirectional nature under interrogation.) Hazard: anyone striking the fork within range of a Wächter should expect to be perceived by it in return.
- Potential player use (if recovered): either as a Wächter control lever (turn the creatures on the Brotherhood) or as an Engine disruption tool (struck in opposing phase inside the Sealed Anatomical Theatre). The conduit property adds a third option: a direct sensory probe of the Engine’s state from outside the anatomical theatre, at the cost of potentially alerting whatever is paying attention on the other end.
Current Location
Branch 2 of the Session_9_Plan §2 Branch Matrix resolved. Adler was captured alive at the Palais Lobkowitz refreshment tables, hamstrung by Georgiana. Nikolai’s Russians yielded both Adler and the fork to Georgiana without contest, honouring the bond. The fork was carried from the dance floor by Katherine to the withdrawing room, where Georgiana requested it and Katherine handed it to her directly. Georgiana has carried it continuously since — through the carriage ride to Thaliastraße 12 and through the night. As of dawn 9 August 1814, the fork is on Georgiana’s person at the safehouse.

Narrative Weight
The tuning fork is the single most narratively significant physical object in the Vienna chapter. It is:
- The proof that the Brotherhood’s command of the Wächter is mechanical, not supernatural
- The recovery prize from Session 8’s combat
- A potential Session 9 player asset with Engine-disruption utility
- A permanent campaign lever against any remaining Wächter
Session 10 Update — The Engine Dreams Back (Night of 8–9 August into Dawn of 9 August 1814)
During the nightmare sequence at Thaliastraße 12, the fork’s A=432 Hz frequency appeared across multiple characters’ dreams simultaneously — suggesting the fork is now broadcasting as much as it receives.
Katherine: Her nightmare fused the fork’s hum with the Hound of Tindalos encountered at St. Margaret’s Academy — same frequency, different predator-shape. She woke screaming and lunged at Georgiana, briefly mistaking her for the creature.
Georgiana: Her nightmare drew her through the Drury Lane Theatre into a vision of the Engine itself; the fork showed her own hands as bronze and clawed. She woke with the fork warm in her hand — certain she had not been holding it when she closed her eyes. For several seconds the room’s colours shifted through an alien spectrum before settling.
Adrien and Varrio: The fork appeared in both their nightmares as a harmonic thread binding the Engine to their personal trauma.
Escalation note. The fork moving to Georgiana’s hand while she slept is a significant step beyond the passive psychic conduit established in Session 9. The fork is no longer simply a tool the carrier uses — it is actively orienting toward its carrier, or responding to a connection Georgiana has not consciously initiated. As of dawn 9 August 1814, the fork has not left her person.
[!info] Keeper Only The autonomous movement during sleep is the clearest signal yet that the fork and Georgiana are developing a bond the Engine can perceive. Any future use of the fork as a psychic probe or Engine-disruption tool should carry a proportionally higher risk of the Engine perceiving her in return — and recognising her specifically.
Session 12 Update — Frequency Confirmed; Counter-Ritual Proposed (11 August 1814)
Frequency Confirmed
Study of the Liber_Ivonis by Georgiana during the forbidden texts study session confirmed the fork vibrates at exactly 432 Hz, identified in the text as the resonant key tied to Yog-Sothoth’s domain. This is now established canon, verified against two independent sources: the Adler interrogation (Session 9) and the Liber Ivonis annotation (Session 12).
Counter-Ritual Plan
At the war council at the Heuriger, Georgiana proposed using the fork as the instrument for the counter-ritual drawn from De_Vermiis_Mysteriis: striking it in opposing phase inside the Sealed Anatomical Theatre to collapse the harmonic fields sustaining the Engine. This is now the primary plan for neutralising the Engine during the assault.
Resonance Compass Tracking
The Resonance Compass (the harmonic compass recovered during the investigation) tracks toward the fork. This confirms the fork’s operational status as a resonating artifact within the Engine’s harmonic network.
Current Status (evening, 11 August 1814)
- Holder: Georgiana, on her person
- Plan: Counter-ritual instrument for the pre-dawn assault on 12 August
- Risk: Georgiana’s existing bond with the Engine means using the fork as a counter-ritual instrument may deepen or sever that bond catastrophically
Session 13 Update — Counter-Ritual Complete; First Operational Use (Pre-dawn, 12 August 1814)
Retuning to Counter-Frequency
During the counter-ritual synthesis conducted in the Thaliastraße 12 safehouse basement, Georgiana successfully retuned the fork to a counter-frequency — the inversion note of the Engine’s A=432 Hz resonance. The counter-ritual is now ready for deployment.
During the retuning, Georgiana received a Conduit Flash: a vision of the operating theatre — victims wired into the Engine, Herzfeld waiting at the central console. The flash was brief and involuntary.
First Operational Use
The fork was struck for the first time in its counter-frequency configuration inside the University courtyard — against a stone fountain. The effect: a zone of deadened sound spreading several feet in all directions. Footsteps were muffled. The ritual’s harmonic field was briefly disrupted.
Autonomous Vibration
As Herzfeld’s ritual commenced from within the Sealed Anatomical Theatre, the fork began vibrating on its own in Georgiana’s pocket — no strike required. The fork is responding to the Engine’s output without being wielded.
Current Status (pre-dawn, 12 August 1814)
- Holder: Georgiana, on her person
- State: Retuned to counter-frequency (inversion note)
- Counter-ritual: Ready
- Risk: The fork’s autonomous vibration confirms the Engine perceives the fork-bearer — proximity to the Sealed Theatre deepens the bond and the exposure
[!info] Keeper Only The fork’s autonomous vibration when Herzfeld activates the Engine is the clearest evidence yet that the bond between Georgiana and the Engine is no longer passive. The Engine is reaching toward the fork — and through it, toward her — without any deliberate action on her part. Using it as the counter-ritual instrument in the Theatre is simultaneously the most effective and the most dangerous thing she can do. The Keeper should be prepared for the fork to respond unpredictably at the moment of maximum Engine output.
Session 14 Update — Counter-Ritual Deployed; Bond Permanent (Pre-dawn, 12 August 1814)
The fork was used by Georgiana to perform the counter-ritual inside the Sealed_Anatomical_Theatre, shutting down the Harmonic_Engine and silencing the Vienna node of the Grand Canticle.
Deployment
Georgiana struck the fork against her sword inside the theatre. The counter-vibrations spread outward, muting the ritual’s harmonic pressure wave. The fork channeled the full counter-ritual, pooling the magical energy of nearby allies into a single sustained counter-frequency that overwhelmed the Engine’s A=432 Hz output.
The Engine Falls
The counter-ritual collapsed the harmonic fields sustaining the Harmonic_Engine. The Engine putrefied and fell apart. The Chorus Dead became inert. One node of Yog-Sothoth’s harmonic network has been successfully shut down.
Bond and Cost
The fork’s bond to Georgiana is now permanent. Only she can use it. The escalation from passive psychic conduit (Session 9) through autonomous vibration (Session 13) to full counter-ritual instrument (Session 14) has fused the fork to its bearer.
Physical cost to Georgiana:
- A white streak in her hair
- Iridescent skin on her left hand (the hand that held the fork)
- A residual hum — faint, constant, audible only to her
Current Status (dawn, 12 August 1814)
- Holder: Georgiana, permanently bonded
- State: Counter-frequency spent; operational status for future use unknown
- Achievement: Successfully shut down the Vienna node of the Grand Canticle
- Resolved: The fork CAN be retuned for other nodes. See Chapter 4 section below.
Chapter 4 — Calcutta Retuning (October 1814)
The Problem
The fork was retuned in Session 13 to counter the Vienna Engine’s A=432 Hz frequency. The Calcutta ritual uses a yantra, not an Engine. The frequency is different. The fork needs retuning before Kali Puja night.
The Mechanic
Same as Session 13: book study to find the new counter-frequency, then Georgiana retunes the fork. An evening’s concentrated work (Day 17, the day before Kali Puja).
Study sources (any one sufficient):
- Tara (if found): Knows the svarita frequency from the inside. Can demonstrate the tone. Georgiana matches the fork to it and inverts. Occult roll: Regular (clearest source).
- Roy’s documentation + the marked PC: Roy’s notes describe acoustic effects. The marked PC’s body responds to the frequency in real time. Georgiana uses the marked PC as a tuning reference, striking the fork at different frequencies until the mark responds. Occult roll: Hard.
- Renwick’s observations: Engineering description of the acoustic properties. Georgiana translates engineering into occult understanding. Occult roll: Hard.
- Inside the temple: Direct exposure to the yantra’s ambient resonance. High risk, high reward. Occult roll: Hard.
Failure doesn’t destroy the fork. It means the counter-frequency is approximate (equivalent to a partial success on the counter-ritual, requiring an additional Occult Regular roll in the field).
Cumulative Cost
Using the fork against a second Canticle node is not repetition. It is escalation. The bond is permanent and the marks are cumulative. POW check each round during the counter-ritual. Failure: the iridescence (left hand) spreads up her arm, the white streak widens, the residual hum becomes audible to others, tissue integrity fails (1D3 HP, SAN 0/1D4 per round). She can drop the fork (ending amplification) or hold on (accepting the deepening bond).
Campaign Through-Line
An artifact captured from one cell, turned against another. The fork resonates with ANY Canticle frequency because it was designed as a conductor’s tool. Turning it against the ritual is using the Choir’s own instrument as a weapon. For Georgiana specifically: the second time she has channeled the Canticle’s power through her body. The first time cost her a streak of white hair and a hand that catches light wrong. The second time will cost more.
Counter-Ritual Role
The fork amplifies Tara’s counter-frequency, acting as a lens that focuses her inverted tone into a coherent beam targeting the yantra’s river output. Without the fork, Tara’s voice alone produces a weaker counter-harmonic (partial success at best). The fork elevates the counter-ritual from “helpful” to “decisive.”
[!info] Keeper Only The counter-ritual is an optional advantage, not a required front. The physical disruption (embankment demolition, channel severance) is sufficient to prevent the catastrophic outcome. The fork provides margin for error. See
