Overview

Sabine is a young woman in her early 20s who works as a serving maid at the Auberge des Deux Chênes, but is in fact a trained knife-fighter and member of Mathieu Durand’s bandit crew. Silent, watchful, and deadly, she represents the darker aspect of the inn’s operations.

Appearance & Demeanor

  • Age: Early 20s
  • Appearance: Slim, unremarkable, dressed in simple serving clothes. She has scarred hands and sharp, observant eyes.
  • Manner: Nearly silent; she moves through the inn like a phantom. She speaks only when necessary, and then in whispers.
  • Voice: Quiet, almost childlike, but with an undercurrent of menace
  • Distinguishing Feature: Her hands are marked with old scars from knife work

Personality

Sabine is broken—shaped by violence into something barely human. She does not speak because she has learned that speaking draws unwanted attention and punishment. She obeys Durand completely because she knows the alternative.

There is no redemption arc for Sabine in Chapter 2. She is a tool, not a person.

Role in Chapter 2

At the Inn

Sabine:

  • Serves guests without speaking
  • Watches doors and windows
  • Reports on guest movements and apparent wealth
  • Participates in the midnight attack with knife and poison

Her job is to:

  • Identify weak points in the investigators’ group
  • Gather intelligence on their valuables
  • Facilitate the attack by unlocking doors or drugging wine

Keeper Notes

  • Sabine is a combat encounter, not a social one
  • She is faster than most combatants but fragile—one solid hit can disable her
  • She will not attempt escape; she will fight until captured or dead
  • If captured, she will not speak or provide information
  • Do not attempt to give her a redemption arc in Chapter 2; there is no time and no mechanism for it
