Harmonic Engine Victims

Abilities

  • Biological functioning within Engine
  • Nerve integration with mechanical systems
  • Harmonic resonance through paralysis

Weaknesses

  • Neurotoxin dependence
  • Engine vulnerability
  • Limited range of motion

Overview

The victims of the Harmonic Engine are human beings transformed into living components of the Engine itself. They are the core horror of the Vienna ritual.

Composition

The Harmonic Engine uses:

  • Pipes: Bronzed esophageal tubes from multiple victims
  • Bellows: Human lungs as pneumatic chambers
  • Keys: Arms and hands wired to mechanical levers
  • Heart: A living human brain at the Engine’s center, interpreting the Canticle score and orchestrating the whole mechanism

Status of Victims

The victims are:

  • Fully Conscious: Aware of their fate and surroundings
  • Completely Paralyzed: Rendered immobile via Austrian alchemical neurotoxins
  • Integrated: Surgically and mechanically connected to the Engine
  • Suffering: Unable to scream, move, or resist
  • Essential: The living components are necessary for the Engine to function

Victim Selection

The Brotherhood selects victims based on:

  • Physical fitness (healthy lungs, strong organs)
  • Vocal capability (for the brain component)
  • Social disposability (people unlikely to be missed)
  • Thematic alignment (singers, musicians, resonant voices)

Ethical/Narrative Horror

The Harmonic Engine represents the Choir’s darkest belief: that humanity’s individuality and autonomy are “errors” that must be eliminated for divine harmony. The victims are conscious proof of this philosophy.

Rescue Possibilities

Whether party members can:

  • Identify victim locations before ritual
  • Extract victims from Engine integration
  • Reverse neurotoxin effects
  • Save victims if Engine is destroyed mid-ritual

These are open questions for session play, depending on party discovery and timing.

[!warning] Keeper Note The victims are the emotional core of the Vienna horror. They are conscious, suffering humans trapped in a biomechanical torture device, designed to generate visceral moral urgency at the table.
