Overview

Dr. Leopold Fischbein is a 52-year-old Viennese lawyer of considerable skill who was introduced as an improvised NPC in Session 6. He represents the party’s connection to Vienna’s legal establishment and to the Jewish Viennese community whose alternative networks operate outside the Geheimpolizei’s reach.

Fischbein is a Jewish Viennese lawyer operating under the restrictions and informal discrimination of Austrian society. Despite these barriers, he has built a successful practice through competence and careful networking — and a willingness to take cases other lawyers will not touch.

Physical Description

A lean man of middle height with sharp features, intense dark eyes, and greying hair worn short. He dresses formally in lawyer’s attire — dark suits, white shirts, conservative cravats. He moves with quick efficiency and speaks with precision. When drinking — which is often — his speech grows looser and his observations sharper.

What Fischbein Can Provide

Legal Assistance:

  • Guidance on Austrian law and legal procedures
  • Help with documentation and bureaucratic requirements
  • Representation in legal matters (including extraction from Geheimpolizei custody)
  • Connections to other lawyers, judges, and legal authorities

Practical Assistance:

  • Advice on navigating Vienna’s complex social and political landscape
  • Introduction to contacts in the Jewish community and other marginal populations
  • Safe accommodations through community connections
  • Intelligence about local figures and their reputations

Intelligence:

  • Knowledge of Vienna’s legal establishment and judicial corruption
  • Information about police practices and Geheimpolizei operations
  • Details about how cases get resolved (or buried) in Vienna

Limitations

Fischbein cannot openly oppose police authority without risking his practice, make direct accusations against highly connected figures (like Kaunitz) without strong evidence, guarantee legal protection from government retaliation, or operate outside the law himself — he must maintain professional standing to remain useful to the party.

Motivation

Fischbein is motivated by professional interest (this case is the most interesting of his career), humanitarian concern (helping those persecuted), community interest (protecting Jewish Vienna and other marginal populations), and a self-aware fascination with the supernatural threat that he cannot fully admit to himself. He told the party in Session 7 that he was “intrigued enough to stay.” That intrigue is now load-bearing.

Session Appearances

Session 6 — Legal Extraction

Fischbein was introduced as an improvised NPC when Freddy_Cavendish rolled a Luck check to know a Viennese lawyer. Found at the Goldener_Hirsch, half-drunk, holding court with merchants’ clerks. He swept into the Polizeidirektion and extracted Varrio from Captain Vogel’s custody through sheer legal competence.

Session 7 — Full Briefing

Varrio and Freddy found Fischbein still drinking at the Goldener Hirsch early the next morning, his law clerk snoring in the corner. They briefed him on the full scope of the threat: the Brotherhood_of_the_Open_Measure, the Harmonic Engine, the harvesting of musicians’ body parts, the ritual being prepared, and the names of key antagonists (Baron von Kaunitz and Captain Vogel). Fischbein listened, then advised them as their lawyer to get the fuck out of town. When asked if he was coming, he admitted he was intrigued enough to stay.

Status as of Session 7: Active ally, fully briefed on the Brotherhood threat. Committed to remaining in Vienna despite his own advice.

Session 8 Update — Bauer Brothers Intelligence (August 8, 1814)

In the hours before the Grand Masquerade, Fischbein delivered to Freddy_Cavendish a piece of operational intelligence the party had been chasing since Session 7: the location of the Bauer brothers, the cult’s hired muscle who had previously been in Vogel’s custody.

What Fischbein Found

  • The Bauer brothers are at the Black Bear Tavern on Taborstrasse, second floor. Klaus and Werner have been quartered there since their release.
  • Vogel personally signed the release order. Fischbein worked the paper trail through court contacts and found the signature himself. This is the documentary proof — not rumour, not inference — that Vogel is using Geheimpolizei authority to free Brotherhood operatives from custody. It is the single most damaging piece of evidence the party currently holds against Vogel and, by extension, against the Geheimpolizei’s compromise.
  • Fischbein delivered this in person. He came to the party at the Goldener Hirsch in the morning, sat down, ordered a coffee he did not drink, and produced the information from a folder he then took back with him. He did not leave the documentation behind — he understands that having his name on the paper trail kills him. The party has the intelligence; Fischbein retains the evidence.

How Fischbein Got It

He has been working his court contacts since the Session 7 briefing. The release order passed through the same Polizeidirektion clerks Fischbein has been bribing for fifteen years. The signature was confirmed against three other Vogel signatures from prior cases. The Bauer brothers’ lodging at the Black Bear was confirmed by a barman who owes Fischbein a favour from a wills dispute.

This is not Order tradecraft. This is Vienna lawyer tradecraft — slow, expensive, and absolutely reliable. It is also why Fischbein is suddenly the party’s most valuable asset for anything that needs to move through Vienna’s legal and bureaucratic plumbing.

What This Enables

The party can now act on the Bauer brothers — confront them, surveil them, extract them, or kill them — at a known location. They can also begin building the formal case against Vogel that will be needed if the post-ritual reckoning involves any kind of legal proceeding. The Bauer-release evidence is, in its own way, more strategically valuable than any single piece of physical evidence the party currently holds.

Current Status (top of Session 9)

  • Physically: Alive, drinking, at the Goldener Hirsch unless events move him
  • Operationally: Most valuable Vienna-bureaucratic asset the party currently holds. Has not been at the masquerade and is therefore unaffected by anything that happened there until news reaches him in the morning.
  • Politically: His name is not yet known to Kaunitz or to Herzfeld, but Vogel knows him from Session 6 and may move against him if the Bauer release evidence comes to light. He is exposed if any of his findings are produced in court without protection.

Open Questions for Session 9

  • What does the party do with the Bauer location? A direct assault, a stakeout, a Pemberton-led infiltration, a Fischbein-mediated formal interrogation — all are possible. Each has different consequences for the Vogel evidence trail.
  • Who tells Fischbein about the masquerade? He will hear about the inhuman creature in the ballroom from his court contacts within hours of dawn on August 9. His reaction — “oh, so it’s that kind of case now” — is the moment he decides whether to stay engaged or quietly withdraw.
  • Does Fischbein become a Vogel target? If Vogel realises Fischbein has the Bauer release paper trail, the lawyer becomes a target for the Geheimpolizei. The party may need to protect him.

Final Notes

Fischbein represents the category of talented, morally sound person operating under institutional constraints. He wants to do the right thing but must be cautious about how he does it. The party can expand his assistance through building trust and providing evidence of genuine need.

[!info] Keeper Only Fischbein is a good ally but not a saviour. He helps with information, legal guidance, and bureaucratic infiltration, but he cannot solve the party’s fundamental problem — the Brotherhood and the Engine. He can help facilitate their investigation, build the formal case against Vogel, and provide cover for the legal aftermath of whatever the party does at the University. He is also the most exposed civilian the party has cultivated. A retaliation move against Fischbein is one of the cleanest pressure points the Brotherhood has available; the Keeper should hold this in reserve.
